Back in October 2015 we were approached by our wonderful clients to better utilise the space that was available to them at the rear and side of their Glen Iris property. With 100sqm maximum to play with it was paramount that we got the layout and proportions right to make the space work to its full potential. Our clients were desperate for a pool for their two young boys but were unsure if space would allow it to be possible. They were also keen on an entertaining area for their family to enjoy meals together.
Safety and usability were the key factors when thinking through the design, location and construction of the pool. To help soften the hardscape elements, we chose to keep the existing bay hedge that runs along the parameter. But this also proved challenging through construction – roots were exposed and needed to be wrapped in hessian to ensure they didn’t dry out.
Our clients had recently renovated the back area of the traditional home so we chose a modern palette for their garden – polished concrete benches, buffed concrete, blue stone paving, all in dark tones. We deliberately added a pop of colour here and there through the outdoor setting, soft furnishings and timber decking for warmth and visual impact.
We are very proud of this little gem – the design and layout works perfectly as each component we’ve included is in scale with the space available to it. It’s such a balancing act getting the proportions right but when done successfully it can make a once unusable small space, feel so much larger and more inviting. We have no doubt that this amazing family of four will find it impossible not to be outside this summer!
