Looking for a deciduous tree that brings structure and spring bloom to the garden? Magnolia x soulangeana, commonly known as the Saucer magnolia, is the tree – or large shrub – to consider.
Magnolia x soulangeana is prized for its large, goblet-shaped, tulip-like flowers, which open in shades of pink, purple and white. The Saucer magnolia grows to between 4 and 8 metres in height, with a spread of 3 to 5 metres.
Landscape Uses
Given its size and presence, Magnolia x soulangeana is most often used as a garden’s focal point, planted alone within a lawn or deck, showcased in our Hawthorn East Escape project. It can also be trained as an espalier against a wall or fence, forming a feature along a boundary line. Within a courtyard, it works well as a controlled-size architectural element, where its fragrance can be enjoyed at close range.
How to Plant
Although planting a Magnolia x soulangeana is straightforward. It requires full sun to partial shade, a position sheltered from strong winds, and a rich, well-drained soil that will not become waterlogged.
When planting, dig a hole twice as wide as the current pot, but no deeper. Loosen the soil around the base and sides of the tree once it is in the ground.
Care and Maintenance
Once planted, provide deep, regular watering through the first two summers to establish a strong root system. Once mature, the tree can tolerate brief dry spells, though it performs best with consistent moisture.
Pruning should be minimal – limited to removing damaged, diseased or crossing branches, with light shaping after flowering finishes or during midsummer dormancy.
To support the best spring bloom, apply a slow-release, acid-forming fertiliser if the leaves show signs of yellowing.
