Luculia gratissima, commonly known as Sweet Luculia or Luculia Swa, is a stunning semi-evergreen shrub to small tree. It’s native to the Himalayan regions of China, Nepal, India, and Bhutan. This elegant plant is best known for its lush, dark green foliage and clusters of soft, deep pink flowers that emit a rich, sweet fragrance.

Luculias thrive in well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. They prefer a position with light, dappled shade, mimicking their natural forest-edge habitat. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, as they are sensitive to heat stress.
These plants grow rounded, typically reaching 3–4 metres high and wide, making them suitable for mid-sized to larger gardens. To keep their roots cool and retain soil moisture during the warmer months, apply a generous layer of mulch around the base, and water regularly throughout summer.
Care and maintenance
Luculias benefit from light pruning immediately after flowering. This helps maintain their rounded shape and encourages healthy new growth and more blooms in the following season.
While they are relatively easy to grow in the right conditions, Luculias, particularly Luculia gratissima, are frost-sensitive and may require protection during cold spells. In cooler regions, consider growing them in large pots that can be moved under cover, or provide frost cloth during particularly cold nights.
Regular feeding with a balanced, acid-loving plant fertiliser in spring and summer will also support vigorous growth and enhance flowering.
